House of Representatives Schedules Emergency Sitting Over INEC’s 2027 Election Timetable

The Nigerian House of Representatives has called for an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to deliberate on critical issues arising from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) newly released timetable for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued late Friday by House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, the lower chamber emphasized the “constitutional and national significance” of INEC’s announcement, particularly the scheduling of presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, February 20, 2027, and governorship and state Houses of Assembly polls for March 6, 2027.

The decision to reconvene was communicated to lawmakers through an internal memorandum from the Office of the Speaker.

Rep. Rotimi stated that the emergency sitting underscores the House’s commitment to addressing matters with profound implications for Nigeria’s democratic process in a timely and decisive manner.

“The emergency sitting reflects the resolve of the House to respond promptly to issues with far-reaching implications for the nation’s democratic process,” he noted, urging all members to prioritize attendance.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, formally unveiled the timetable and schedule of activities on Friday, February 13, 2026, during a press conference in Abuja. The commission’s timeline includes: Party primaries and resolution of related disputes from May 22 to June 20, 2026; Continuous voter registration commencing in April 2026;  Presidential and National Assembly campaigns from November 18, 2026, to February 19, 2027.

The release aligns with provisions in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s guidelines. However, it has sparked public debate, including concerns from some stakeholders particularly within the Muslim community over the February date potentially overlapping with the Ramadan fasting period in 2027, depending on the lunar calendar sighting.

INEC has clarified that the dates were fixed in strict compliance with legal timelines and has indicated openness to legislative interventions if necessary to address stakeholder concerns. The commission also announced plans for a mock presidential election to test electronic result transmission systems.

The House’s swift response comes amid ongoing legislative efforts to amend the Electoral Act ahead of 2027, including discussions on enhancing electronic transmission of results, real-time result viewing, and other reforms to bolster electoral credibility and transparency.

Opposition parties have welcomed the early timetable release for aiding planning but stressed the need for credible, transparent polls.

Analysts view the emergency session as a proactive step by the House to review the timetable’s implications, potentially paving the way for accelerated amendments or resolutions that could influence INEC’s preparations. All eyes will be on Tuesday’s proceedings as lawmakers engage on these pivotal electoral matters.

The development signals an early ramp-up in political and legislative activity toward the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders emphasizing the importance of inclusive, fair, and hitch-free polls to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
