House of Reps Erupts in Heated Clash Over Budget Delays, Motion Seeking Tinubu’s Appearance Rejected

A dramatic session unfolded in the House of Representatives on Wednesday as lawmakers engaged in a heated confrontation over concerns surrounding the implementation of the 2026 budget and delays in the release of funds to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The tension-filled debate was triggered by a motion sponsored by the member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Hon. Mascot Ikwechegh, who raised alarm over the slow pace of budget execution and its implications for government projects and service delivery across the country.

At the heart of the controversy was a key prayer in the motion seeking the appearance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the House to provide explanations on budget implementation challenges and delays in fund disbursement.

The proposal immediately divided lawmakers, sparking sharp exchanges across the chamber. Members opposed to the motion repeatedly interrupted colleagues speaking in support of it, shouting “sit down” and creating a charged atmosphere that disrupted proceedings.

For nearly 30 minutes, the Green Chamber witnessed intense arguments as lawmakers debated the propriety of inviting the President to address the concerns raised in the motion.

The commotion underscored growing frustration among some legislators over reports that delayed releases of approved funds have affected the operations of several government agencies and slowed the execution of critical projects captured in the national budget.

As tensions escalated, Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas stepped in to restore order and rule on the matter.

In his decision, Abbas overruled the motion, explaining that the prayers presented on the floor differed from those contained in the original document submitted by the sponsor.

The Speaker described the discrepancy as a deviation from the approved text and ruled that the motion could not proceed in its altered form.

His ruling effectively brought an end to the contentious debate, although it did little to mask the deep divisions exposed during the session.

The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of the Federal Government’s budget implementation process, with concerns being raised in various quarters about the pace of project execution and the timely release of funds to MDAs.

Political observers say the rowdy session reflects broader concerns within the legislature over accountability, fiscal performance, and the effective implementation of government policies.

While the motion was ultimately rejected, the debate highlighted the growing demand among lawmakers for greater transparency and efficiency in the management and execution of the nation’s budget.

The House is expected to continue oversight of budget performance as the 2026 fiscal year progresses, with legislators likely to seek further explanations from relevant government agencies on funding delays and project implementation challenges.
