I’m Not Desperate to be President, I Just Want Nigeria to Work-Obi

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, has reiterated his commitment to seeing Nigeria become a better country. Speaking at the fourth convocation ceremony of Nexford University, a US-based online school, Obi emphasized that his desire is not to occupy the presidency, but to ensure that Nigeria works for the benefit of all its citizens.

Obi decried the current state of leadership in the country, describing it as “an imposition on the people.” He urged the graduating students to embrace the spirit of servitude and lead effectively, igniting the needed change in the country. According to him, the youths must help reignite the right leadership that Nigeria requires for development.

The former governor noted that Nigeria has the potential to prosper but has refused to take the necessary steps. He quoted James Robinson, a Nobel laureate in economics, who said that Nigeria is a country that knows what to do to prosper but refuses to do it. Obi emphasized that the younger generation must not allow themselves to be driven by those who have passed their time and destinations.

Obi’s remarks come after his experience as a presidential candidate in the 2023 election, where he polled third behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite the outcome, Obi remains committed to his vision for a better Nigeria, and his passion for seeing the country work is evident in his words.
