A Kaduna-based human rights group, K-23 Movement, has commended the National Security Adviser, Mal Nuhu Ribadu, for his efforts to tackle banditry, terrorism, and other security challenges in the country. The group’s chairman, Comrade Bashir Bello, expressed his appreciation for Ribadu’s proactive steps, which have already started to yield positive results.

Bello also criticized former Governor Nasir El-Rufai for his “unprovoked vituperations” against Ribadu and the Kaduna State Governor. According to Bello, El-Rufai’s actions are unacceptable, especially considering the former governor’s own history of alleged corruption and human rights abuses.

The K-23 Movement described Ribadu as a man of proven integrity, who served his country meritoriously as the pioneer chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The group reiterated its readiness to support Ribadu in his efforts to rid the north of insecurity challenges.

El-Rufai’s administration in Kaduna State was criticized for its reputation for political repression, including the detention of journalists, traditional leaders, politicians, and academics without recourse to fairness. The group cited several examples of individuals who were detained or abducted during El-Rufai’s tenure, including journalist Luka Biniyat, who spent 185 days in jail, and Abubakar Idris, who was abducted from his home and remains missing to this day.

The group called on relevant agencies to investigate El-Rufai’s record of abuse of office and human rights violations

The K-23 Movement also accused El-Rufai of failing to disclose the trillions of naira that accrued to the state coffers from various grants and loans during his eight years in office. The group called on relevant agencies to investigate El-Rufai’s record of abuse of office and human rights violations, including arbitrary detention and the illegal demolition of homes and business properties.

The group emphasized the need for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute El-Rufai for the alleged charges of monumental corruption leveled against him by the State House of Assembly and other crimes committed against the state.
