The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled plans to kickstart the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in preparation for the forthcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement during a crucial meeting with leaders of political parties at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

Yakubu clarified that the CVR exercise in both states aims to facilitate voter registration for eligible citizens who are not yet registered voters.

He outlined the timeline for the CVR in Edo and Ondo States, scheduled to run from Monday, May 27, 2024, to Wednesday, June 5, 2024, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm daily, including weekends.

Addressing concerns regarding voter transfers, Yakubu emphasized that registered voters also have the opportunity to transfer their registration from other states or within the two states during the CVR period.

However, he cautioned against multiple registrations, reiterating that the CVR is exclusively for new registrants and those seeking transfers.

“Let me reiterate that the CVR is only open to new registrants and those who seek to transfer their registration. Persons who are registered as voters should not attempt to register again as double or multiple registration is illegal,” Yakubu emphasized.

Furthermore, the INEC Chair announced a change in the registration venues, opting for ward-level and state headquarters instead of local government offices and designated centers, considering the proximity to the governorship elections and the need for efficient registration.

The commencement of the CVR exercise signals a critical phase in the electoral process, ensuring broader participation and fostering democratic representation in Edo and Ondo states ahead of the scheduled governorship polls.
