International Anti-Corruption Day Marked with Pledge to Promote Transparency in Adamawa

In commemoration of International Anti-Corruption Day, Adamawa State hosted a high-level seminar at the AUN Hotel, bringing together government officials, civil society organizations, and members of the international community. The event, themed “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” aimed to promote transparency, accountability, and justice in Nigeria.

The seminar was organized under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA. In his opening remarks, the Head of Civil Service, Pharm. Isa Shehu Ardo (mni), emphasized the importance of adopting a bottom-up approach to fight corruption, particularly by targeting youth. He urged the Anti-Corruption Secretariat to extend its outreach to secondary schools to “catch them young” and nurture a culture of integrity.

Participants at the seminar discussed the progress of the Adamawa State Anti-Corruption Strategy (ADSACS), addressing its impact and challenges, and outlined next steps to ensure sustainability and improved anti-corruption mechanisms. They emphasized the need for collective efforts to tackle corruption, describing it as a menace requiring decisive action.

International Anti-Corruption Day is observed on December 9 every year, highlighting the action people can take to tackle corruption. The United Nations Convention Against Corruption was adopted in 2003, and 2023 marked 20 years since its adoption.
