In a surprising revelation, the Federal Government has disclosed that at least 10 million migrants currently reside in Nigeria. This announcement was made by the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Hon. Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, during a walk in commemoration of the 2024 International Migration Day in Abuja.

Ahmed also noted that there are over 20 million Nigerian migrants scattered around the world, contributing significantly to the country’s development through technological transfer and remittances. In fact, Nigeria received no less than $23 billion in remittances last year, showcasing the vital role migrants play in the country’s economy.

As Nigeria prepares to take over the leadership of the Rabat Process next year, Ahmed solicited support from all stakeholders to ensure the country’s success in governing migration internationally. The theme of this year’s International Migrants Day, “Honouring the contributions of migrants and respecting their rights,” highlights the importance of recognizing the positive impact migrants have on their host countries, while also addressing the challenges they face.

Globally, the number of international migrants has reached 281 million, accounting for 3.6% of the world’s population. Unfortunately, migrant deaths are on the rise, with 2023 recording the highest annual death toll to date. Migrants also face mental health challenges, stigma, discrimination, and violence, which can erode their sense of belonging and cultural identity.
