Investigative Journalist Fisayo Soyombo Detained by Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army’s 6 Division in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has reportedly detained Fisayo Soyombo, a renowned investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ). According to a statement released by FIJ on X, Soyombo has been in detention for three days.

The journalist had released videos and statements on his social media platforms, alleging that customs personnel conspired with a smuggler to illegally pass about 2000 cars and smuggle in bags of rice into the country. The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has denied these allegations.

Journalism is not a crime

The Nigerian Army has not commented on Soyombo’s detention, sparking concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists in the country. FIJ has condemned the detention, stating that “journalism is not a crime.”

Soyombo’s detention has raised eyebrows, given his reputation for fearless investigative reporting. His work has earned him several awards and recognition, including the Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism and the West Africa Media Excellence Award.
