Irigwe Youth Movement Advocates for Free Education for Displaced Children Amid Ongoing Insecurity

The Irigwe Youth Movement has made a compelling call for Nigerian authorities to introduce free education for children displaced by the ongoing violence attributed to Fulani ethnic militias.

Ezekiel Bini, the National President of the movement, earnestly urged Plateau State Governor Barr. Caleb Mutfwang to prioritize educational support for the affected children in Irigwe communities across Plateau and Kaduna states. Since 2017, the region has faced tremendous challenges, with over 1,691 lives lost and more than 10,000 individuals displaced due to sustained attacks. Sadly, around 100 vigilante members who courageously defended their communities have lost their lives since 2021.

In response to these pressing needs, the Irigwe Youth Movement has launched an initiative aimed at alleviating the burden on families by covering the exam fees for children of fathers who served as community vigilantes and have been killed in these tragic circumstances.

This commendable program was inaugurated on February 24th at ECWA B1 Secondary School in Miango, Bassa LGA of Plateau State blending acts of compassion with a tribute to the fallen heroes. Bini stated, “Education is a powerful weapon against oppression. We want these children to thrive despite the hardships they face.”

The violence in the region has not only impacted civilians but has also claimed the lives of security personnel. Reports indicate that Fulani militants ambushed a Nigerian Army unit in 2023 near Riyom, Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers. A similar ambush in 2021 in Shiroro, Niger State, took the lives of 30 military personnel and 25 vigilantes. Despite the Nigerian Army’s presence, rural communities remain vulnerable to such attacks. The Irigwe Youth Movement believes that education can be a sustainable solution, empowering youth with knowledge and resilience to help rebuild their futures.

Among the beneficiaries, 15-year-old Joy Bulus from Nzharuvo village aspires to become an accountant. Grateful for the initiative that covers her exam fees, she expressed her determination: “I will read to pass,” aiming to honor the memory of her late father, who was among the vigilantes killed. Her resolve serves as a beacon of hope for other children facing similar challenges. Another recipient, a widow working hard to support her child’s education, shared her heartfelt appreciation: “I didn’t know how I would afford my child’s final exams, but your generosity has truly blessed our family.”

Community leaders are now urging more individuals and organizations to support this transformative initiative. Samson Rivi, a representative of the Miango Youth Development Association, commended the Irigwe Youth Movement for its proactive efforts, stating, “These young leaders demonstrate that even without government backing, communities can unite to uplift their members.” He called on compassionate Nigerians to contribute to the Irigwe Youth Scholarship Fund to sustain and grow the program.

Bini also encouraged Governor Mutfwang to consider declaring free education for orphans whose parents have been victims of violence. “Many of these children have lost everything; education can offer them hope,” he emphasized. He invited individuals, churches, and humanitarian organizations to come together to ensure that no displaced child is deprived of education. “We may not be government officials, but we stand firmly in support of these children. Their parents fought valiantly for our community, and it is our duty to honor their legacy by securing a brighter future for their children.”

The Irigwe Youth Movement’s initiative exemplifies resilience amidst adversity. While the government grapples with policy solutions, these young individuals are taking meaningful action—showing that even in challenging times, hope can flourish through education.
