According to military insiders, the incident occurred shortly after Brig. Gen. Uba, who served as a Brigade Commander within Operation Hadin Kai, participated in a successful joint air ground offensive targeting insurgent positions in the region. The operation was said to have inflicted significant casualties on the militants, disrupting their logistics routes and dismantling several makeshift camps. However, it also appears to have provoked a swift and calculated retaliation from ISWAP.
Sources revealed that the terrorists, using a combination of intercepted radio signals and informant networks, trailed the officer’s convoy as he was returning from the battlefield. The attackers reportedly laid an ambush along a remote stretch of the Damboa Biu road, an area known for sporadic militant activity. The insurgents opened fire on the convoy with heavy weapons, overwhelming the escort team and hitting the commander’s vehicle.
