It Endangers Democracy: AKpabio Raises Alarm Over Insecurity, Urges Nigerians to Support Security Agencies

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has warned that rising insecurity across Nigeria poses a serious threat to the country’s democratic progress, calling on citizens to work closely with security agencies to combat kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes.

Speaking during an inter-denominational church service held as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Akpabio said many communities across the country continue to suffer attacks, while farmers, travellers, and ordinary citizens live in fear and uncertainty.

The Senate President described the abduction of innocent citizens, especially children, as a national tragedy that has deeply affected the country’s conscience. He assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to securing the release of those held captive and restoring peace and stability nationwide.

According to him, the government is determined to defeat criminal elements and ensure the safe return of all abducted persons.

Akpabio stressed that addressing insecurity should not be left solely to the government, urging citizens to remain vigilant and provide useful information to security agencies.

He called on communities to cooperate with security operatives, discourage criminal activities, and continue supporting efforts aimed at safeguarding lives and property.

The Senate President revealed that the plight of kidnapped children resonates strongly with him due to a personal experience during the Nigerian Civil War. He recalled being separated from his mother alongside his sister for several days in Ikot Ekpene, an ordeal he said gave him an understanding of the pain and anxiety experienced by parents whose children are held captive.

He expressed sympathy for families of abducted victims, noting that many parents endure sleepless nights worrying about the safety and wellbeing of their loved ones.

Akpabio also acknowledged the role of faith and prayers in sustaining Nigeria’s democratic journey. He commended religious leaders and churches for their contributions during the nation’s struggle for democratic governance and for continuing to promote peace and unity.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, he stated that democracy must go beyond conducting elections and should be measured by its ability to improve the lives of citizens through accountable and people-centred governance.

The Senate President further acknowledged the economic difficulties facing many Nigerians. He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had directed that this year’s Democracy Day celebrations be observed on a modest scale in recognition of the prevailing economic challenges.

While urging citizens to remain patient with ongoing reforms, Akpabio expressed confidence that the measures being implemented would eventually deliver positive results and strengthen the nation’s economy.

Addressing young Nigerians, he encouraged greater participation in the democratic process, urging them not to withdraw from national affairs but to contribute ideas, innovation, and leadership toward building a better country.

He also cautioned against divisive politics and emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths. According to him, national unity and cooperation are essential for sustainable development, as no region can prosper in isolation from others.

Akpabio concluded by calling for continued prayers for President Tinubu, the National Assembly, the judiciary, the armed forces, and other public institutions, expressing optimism that Nigeria would overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger as a democratic nation.
