Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has boldly declared his intention to contest for the governorship of Oyo State in 2027, invoking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s famous “E mi Lokan” (It’s my turn) slogan.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement with All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, Adelabu asserted that he has “paid his dues” in the state’s political landscape and is poised to unseat the incumbent governor, Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Adelabu, who previously ran for governor in 2019 under the APC and in 2023 under the Accord Party, faced defeat in both elections against Makinde. After his 2023 loss, he rejoined the APC following his appointment as Minister of Power by President Tinubu. In a viral video, Adelabu rallied party faithful, stating, “I contested against Seyi in 2019. In 2023, I also contested against Seyi, then as the sitting governor. But this 2027, God has shown that it’s my turn.”
The minister emphasized his commitment to a grassroots campaign, promising a “house-to-house” effort to reclaim Oyo for the APC. “It’s Adelabu time. Anything that belongs to Adelabu belongs to us all,” he declared in Yoruba, urging supporters to unite in the quest to end PDP’s dominance in the state.
Adelabu’s announcement has sparked reactions across Oyo’s political circles, with analysts noting his strategic use of Tinubu’s political playbook to galvanize support. As the 2027 elections approach, all eyes will be on whether Adelabu can translate his ministerial influence and renewed APC backing into a successful bid for the governorship.
