JAMB Releases Results of 11,161 Candidates from June 28 Mop-Up UTME, Over 80% Absent

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the release of results for 11,161 candidates who participated in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) mop-up exercise held on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

They registered with their names, schools, and NINs. The security agencies are capable of picking them up, and a number have already been apprehended

The mop-up exam, designed for 96,838 candidates, saw an alarming absentee rate of over 80%, raising concerns about examination integrity and candidate accountability.

The mop-up examination was scheduled to accommodate three categories of candidates: 5,096 spillover candidates from previous sessions, those who faced biometric verification issues during the main UTME, and 91,742 candidates absent from the main or rescheduled exams. Conducted across 183 Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres nationwide, the exercise aimed to provide a fair opportunity for eligible candidates to secure their chance at tertiary education.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, expressed concern over the low turnout, noting that only about 12% of registered candidates appeared for the exam. He attributed the massive absenteeism to intensified security measures targeting impersonation and examination malpractice.

“They registered with their names, schools, and NINs. The security agencies are capable of picking them up, and a number have already been apprehended,” Oloyede stated during a monitoring exercise in Abuja. He hinted that parents financing malpractice schemes could also face investigation.

The mop-up exam followed a turbulent 2025 UTME season marred by technical glitches affecting 157 centres, primarily in Lagos and the South-East. These issues prompted a rescheduled exam in May for over 300,000 candidates and the subsequent mop-up for those still unable to participate.

JAMB’s efforts to curb fraud led to the delisting of 113 CBT centres for infractions, including technical deficiencies and suspected malpractice, with some centres under ongoing security investigations.

Candidates can check their results by sending “UTMERESULT” (in uppercase) via SMS to 55019 or 66019 using the phone number registered with JAMB. The board has advised that result printing will be available later through the official JAMB portal.

Oloyede emphasized that the mop-up exercise was a one-time opportunity for 2025 UTME candidates, particularly targeting absenteeism and impersonation. “This is not a free pass. Suspected impersonators will face accountability,” he warned, noting that some undergraduate students caught impersonating others have been reported to their institutions for disciplinary action.

The low turnout has sparked debate among education stakeholders. Dr. Babangida Sa’idu, an educationist from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, attributed candidate underperformance to a lack of seriousness and parental oversight. “Candidates are distracted, taking selfies at CBT centres instead of preparing,” he remarked, urging better focus on academic preparation.
