Jonathan Will Run Under PDP in 2027, Says Jerry Gana

Former Minister of Information and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Professor Jerry Gana, has declared that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan will contest the 2027 presidential election as the PDP’s candidate, citing widespread public demand for his return.

Speaking on Saturday in Minna after the Niger State PDP chapter elected new officials, Gana said Nigerians, disillusioned by the governance of former President Muhammadu Buhari (2015-2023) and the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, are yearning for Jonathan’s leadership.

“In 2015, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan said his ambition is not worth the blood of Nigerians. After him, another president ruled for eight years, and now another has ruled for two years. Nigerians have seen the difference, and the difference is very clear. They are now asking us to bring back our friend, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan,” Gana stated.

He confirmed, “I can confirm that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will contest the presidential election in 2027 as PDP candidate, and you will vote for him to return as President again.” Gana emphasized the PDP’s democratic credentials, noting that the party reflects the will of the people.

“PDP has tremendous opportunity in 2027 because it is truly a grassroots party. The people of Nigeria love the PDP because it came with programmes that are people-oriented,” he added.

Gana dismissed claims of internal crises within the PDP, referencing a recent consultative conference in Abuja where founding members resolved key issues. He also criticized the Tinubu administration, accusing it of discouraging foreign investment through “evil gatekeepers,” asserting that Nigeria remains an attractive destination for investors.

The PDP state congress in Niger saw Alhaji Aliyu Halidu emerge as the new state chairman, securing 1,289 votes to narrowly defeat Alhaji Yahaya Abdullahi, who polled 1,269 votes. Announcing the results, Chairman of the PDP Electoral Committee, Alhaji Tanimu Turaki, noted that eight positions were contested, while others, including the secretary position won unopposed by former commissioner Alhaji Khadi Kuta, were uncontested.

Mrs. Salome Ndakosu won the women leader position with 1,373 votes, defeating Ramotu Jibrin, who garnered 590 votes.

In his acceptance speech, Halidu rallied PDP members to strengthen the party, stating, “PDP is strong in population at the grassroots. PDP is ready to dislodge the ruling party in 2027. I, therefore, implore members to join hands in ensuring the return of a people-oriented government in 2027.”

Jonathan’s potential candidacy has sparked widespread discussion, with many Nigerians reflecting on his 2010-2015 presidency, marked by economic growth but also challenges like security issues and corruption allegations. As the 2027 election approaches, the PDP appears to be positioning itself as a formidable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), banking on Jonathan’s name recognition and perceived pub lic goodwill.
