Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) has revealed a staggering surge in vandalism, with over 80 transformers vandalized and looted within its franchise areas in just 10 days.

The company’s Chief Technical Officer, Eng. Hamisu Wakili Jigawa, disclosed the alarming figures on Friday, citing Plateau State as the most affected region.

The vandalism of transformers and theft of cables severely impacted our ability to supply power efficiently

“The vandalism of transformers and theft of cables severely impacted our ability to supply power efficiently,” Eng. Jigawa said. “The level of vandalism is unprecedented, with entire power lines and aluminum conductors feeding communities completely destroyed. We have lost a lot of distribution assets, especially distribution transformers and cables. In some cases, vandals removed the oil, coil, and everything, leaving only empty tanks.”

Eng. Jigawa appealed to communities to safeguard electrical assets, warning that vandalism perpetuates darkness and hardship. “We urge communities to be vigilant and report suspicious activities around electrical infrastructure,” he emphasized.
