June 12 Election Hero, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Passes On

Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the renowned Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) from 1989 to 1993, has passed away at the age of 83 in a hospital in Virginia, United States. Born on October 2, 1941, Nwosu played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s history, conducting the June 12, 1993, election, widely regarded as the country’s freest and fairest election to date.

Under Nwosu’s leadership, the NEC introduced innovative voting systems. The election saw Chief Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party emerge victorious, defeating Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention. However, the election was annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida’s military regime.

Nwosu’s courage and commitment to democracy were recently recognized by the House of Representatives, which called on President Bola Tinubu to immortalize him for conducting the most credible election in post-independence Nigeria.

Professor Humphrey Nwosu’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations of Nigerians, and his contributions to the country’s democratic journey will remain unforgettable.
