Commercial bus drivers plying Awka/Onitsha old road in Anambra State, under the aegis of Urban Drivers Welfare Association, are currently protesting multiple taxation imposed on them by the state government led by Governor Willie Obiano.
According to the drivers, the Obiano’s administration force them to buy two thousand Naira worth of tickets everyday.
The ticket increment comes despite the fact that they have reduced the number of passengers they carry from 14 to 7 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Reacting, our corresponding, Mr. Odumodu Gbulagu said:
“Protests are becoming a norm in the state these days.
“If communities are not protesting bad roads, they will be protesting imposition of Traditional rulers and Town Union Executives.
“Or traders and drivers will be protesting multiple taxation.
“From Main Market, to Eke Awka, to Upper Iweka, even to the streets, and all the roads in Anambra state, it’s extortion galore, and that’s exactly how Willie is Working.”
The placard-carrying protesters displayed placards with various inscriptions such as:
7 PERSONS PER BUS; NO MORE TICKET
NO MORE TICKET; NO MORE TICKET
STOP THE OBNOXIOUS TICKETS, et al.
