In a dramatic turn of events amid the ongoing leadership tussle in the Lagos State House of Assembly, police have restored security details to the impeached former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, while simultaneously withdrawing those assigned to the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. The move, confirmed by sources close to both camps on Thursday, signals a potential shift in the power dynamics within the state legislature.

Obasa, who was removed from his position on January 13, 2025, by a majority of lawmakers over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement, has consistently challenged the legality of his impeachment. His security personnel were reinstated just hours after all police escorts assigned to Meranda and the legislative complex were pulled, raising concerns about the safety of the current Speaker and the stability of the Assembly.

Meranda’s Special Adviser on Information, Victor Ganzallo, expressed alarm over the development, stating, “As of this morning, all security has been withdrawn from the Speaker, leaving her vulnerable and exposed to potential threats. This is an unprecedented situation that demands urgent attention.” He warned that the decision could jeopardize the Speaker’s safety and the functioning of the Assembly.

Meanwhile, a source from Obasa’s camp confirmed the restoration of his security aides, hinting at a possible comeback for the former Speaker. “All of Obasa’s security personnel have been restored as of today,” the source said, declining to elaborate further on the implications.

The leadership crisis, which began with Obasa’s impeachment and Meranda’s historic election as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, has escalated in recent weeks. Reports indicate that key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including a mediating panel led by elders like Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba, have been working to resolve the deadlock. Speculation is rife that Obasa’s reinstatement could be imminent, following the withdrawal of a lawsuit he filed against the Assembly and Meranda earlier this week.

The Lagos State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the reasoning behind the security reshuffle. However, the development has heightened tensions in Alausa, Ikeja, where the Assembly complex is located, with observers describing it as a critical juncture in the ongoing power struggle.

As the situation unfolds, Lagos residents and political analysts await further clarity on whether this marks the beginning of Obasa’s return or a deeper crisis for Meranda’s leadership. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
