In a move to address the grey areas in the tax reform bills, the Senate has constituted a committee headed by Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South). The committee’s task is to review the bills, consult with stakeholders, and report back to the committee of the whole before the public hearing on the bills.
Deputy Senate President Barau I Jibrin (APC, Kano North) announced the committee’s formation during plenary on Wednesday, citing controversies surrounding the bills. The committee will consult with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the executive arm, and other critical stakeholders.
The tax reform bills, transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on October 3, 2024, aim to bolster Nigeria’s fiscal institutions and align with the government’s broader development objectives. However, the bills have faced opposition from various quarters, including governors, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and some federal lawmakers.

The committee, which includes Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orjir Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaha (Kebbi North), among others, is expected to conduct a thorough review of the bills and engage with stakeholders to address the concerns surrounding the legislation.
The committee’s review and consultation process is expected to address the concerns surrounding the tax reform bills, ensuring that the legislation serves the best interests of Nigerians.
