Kaduna Government Sounds Alarm on Flood Risks, Rolls Out Statewide Awareness Campaign

The Kaduna State Government has intensified efforts to mitigate potential flooding as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasts above-normal rainfall across the state during the 2026 rainy season.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said the government is taking proactive steps to safeguard lives and property through enhanced public sensitization and emergency preparedness.

According to NiMet’s 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction report, Kaduna is among states at high risk of flooding. Rainfall is expected to commence between May 19 and June 10, 2026, and cease between October 5 and October 21.

The forecast also predicts a possible severe 21-day dry spell between June and August, which could exacerbate flooding and related environmental challenges.

“The Kaduna State Government is taking this forecast seriously. Early preparedness and public cooperation remain critical to reducing the impact of flooding on our communities,” Maiyaki said.

The Ministry of Information and Culture, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), has launched a statewide sensitization campaign.

Residents are being urged to clear drainages around homes and business premises, refrain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into waterways, and adopt simple flood control measures such as the use of sandbags.

Maiyaki called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, media organizations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to support the campaign by promoting environmental sanitation and sharing verified information.

KADSEMA has also begun vulnerability assessments in flood-prone areas, strengthened coordination for emergency response, and initiated pre-positioning of resources for potential rescue operations.

“The safety of citizens remains a top priority for the Kaduna State Government. We will continue to work with all relevant agencies and communities to ensure timely information dissemination and effective disaster risk reduction measures throughout the rainy season,” the Commissioner added.

The development comes after recent flooding submerged communities in parts of the state, highlighting the urgent need for collective action ahead of the peak rainy season.
