Hayin Gizo, a quiet suburb of Garun Kurama in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was thrown into chaos in the early hours of Sunday, May 18, 2025, when suspected kidnappers struck, abducting six residents.

The attack, which occurred around 1:30 a.m., saw armed gunmen storm the community, located just two kilometers from Garun Kurama, wielding guns and dangerous weapons in a terrifying operation that lasted until 3:00 a.m.

According to a village head, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the kidnappers took six able-bodied men and one woman. The woman was later released along the way due to her frail health condition. Two Igbos who are traders in the community were also kidnapped alongside. The community awoke to a somber mood, gripped by fear and uncertainty over the fate of their loved ones.

The village head appealed to security agencies and well-meaning individuals to intervene swiftly to secure the safe return of the captives. He described the abducted as peasant farmers living hand-to-mouth, urging the kidnappers to show mercy, as their families cannot afford ransom payments. “These are poor farmers with nothing to offer. We beg for their release,” he pleaded.

Lere, alongside Kauru, Kachia, Zango Kataf, and Jema’a Local Government Areas, has faced a surge in kidnappings and attacks by unknown gunmen in recent months, exacerbating insecurity in Kaduna State. Residents continue to live in fear as such incidents become alarmingly frequent.
