Kaduna Residents Plead for Military Base as Bandits Displace 39 Communities

Residents of Kauru Local Government Area in Kaduna State have issued a desperate appeal to the federal and Kaduna State governments to urgently establish a military base in their communities, citing the displacement of villagers from at least 39 settlements by relentless bandit attacks.

The worsening insecurity has forced the closure of mosques and churches, claimed lives, and destroyed properties, leaving entire communities in fear and disarray.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna on Sunday, Reverend Musa Hassan Shedari, who led a delegation of community leaders, listed some of the affected areas as Unguwar Isa, Hayin Pastor, Gidan Kunkun, Sabon Layi, Dutsen Yelwa, Randa, Kabari, Unguwar Ganye, and Kadage, among others.

“About 39 communities have so far been displaced. We are all affected — Hausa and Fulani, Muslims and Christians alike,” Shedari said.

He added that the displaced residents are currently taking refuge in Saminaka, Zaria, and Kauru town, while many families have paid millions of naira in ransom to free abducted loved ones.

Another community leader, Ibrahim Hore from Kadage village, shared a harrowing personal account: two of his children were kidnapped and only released after he paid N4 million in ransom.

“Bandits now operate freely in our area. Farmers live in constant fear. Many have fled, especially the young men, while only a few remain to tend to the farms despite the risks,” Hore lamented.

The leaders stressed that the situation cuts across ethnic and religious lines, urging immediate government intervention to restore peace and enable residents to return to their homes and farmlands.

This latest appeal comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of Kaduna State, where banditry has continued to displace communities and disrupt agricultural activities.

The residents called on both federal and state authorities to act swiftly by deploying a permanent military presence to secure the area and prevent further attacks.
