Kano Begins Medical Screening for 3,000 Couples Ahead of  Mass Wedding

The Kano State Hisbah Board has commenced comprehensive medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples ahead of the state-sponsored mass wedding programme designed to support vulnerable residents and strengthen family values across the state.

The exercise, which begins on Monday, is expected to screen 1,500 men and 1,500 women selected from 24 local government areas before they are cleared to participate in the marriage programme.

Announcing the development, Deputy Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Mujahideen Aminuddeen, said all prospective participants must report to their respective Hisbah offices for the mandatory screening process.

The affected local government areas include Rogo, Wudil, Tudun Wada, Warawa, Kibiya, Dawakin Tofa, Garun Malam, Kura, Dambatta, Karaye, Tsanyawa, Minjibir, Rimin Gado, Shanono, Kabo, Tofa, Rano, Bebeji, Ajingi, Gwarzo, Sumaila, Kiru, Takai and Madobi.

According to Aminuddeen, the screening will assess HIV/AIDS status, hepatitis infection, genotype compatibility, drug use and pregnancy status for female applicants. He emphasized that only candidates who successfully pass the medical examination will qualify for the wedding programme.

The initiative forms part of the Kano State Government’s broader social intervention agenda under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who recently unveiled plans to sponsor the marriages of 3,000 residents, primarily widows, divorcees, orphans and low-income individuals.

As part of the support package, each groom will receive ₦100,000 to cover dowry expenses, while newly married couples will be provided with essential household items, including beds, mattresses, wardrobes and food supplies.

In addition, beneficiaries will receive ₦100,000 business grants aimed at helping them establish small-scale enterprises and improve their economic prospects after marriage.

Officials say the programme is designed to promote social stability, reduce economic hardship and encourage responsible family formation among vulnerable groups in the state.

The mass wedding scheme has attracted widespread public interest and praise for its potential to provide relief to individuals struggling with the financial burden of marriage. However, some observers have raised concerns over the long-term sustainability of the initiative and its broader socio-economic impact.

Despite the concerns, state authorities maintain that participation remains entirely voluntary and is based on mutual consent between intending couples.

The upcoming mass wedding is expected to be one of the largest government-sponsored marriage programmes in Nigeria, underscoring Kano State’s continued efforts to address social welfare challenges through targeted community-based interventions.
