Kano Governor Abba Nominates Garo as New Deputy

‎Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has nominated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor of the state, following the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

‎The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who stated that the nomination was made in accordance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empowers a governor to nominate a replacement when the office of deputy governor becomes vacant.

‎“Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, the Governor has requested the Kano State House of Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination,” the statement read.

‎The development comes after Comrade Gwarzo resigned from office amid political tensions. He had reportedly fallen out with the governor after declining to follow him in switching from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Impeachment proceedings were initiated against him by the State House of Assembly before he tendered his resignation. Gwarzo subsequently left the NNPP and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

‎Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, aged 48, brings over two decades of extensive experience in both elective and appointive positions.

He has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.

He also served as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and was the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.

‎Governor Yusuf described Garo as a seasoned political administrator whose nomination forms part of efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery across Kano State.

‎The nomination is expected to be forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation in line with constitutional requirements.
