In a significant display of integrity, the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi has turned down a Sh12.3 million donation from President William Ruto, stressing the Church’s policy against accepting funds from political figures. The announcement was made by Archbishop Philip Anyolo in a statement issued on Monday.
The controversial donation, made during a church service on Sunday, November 17, was designated for various church initiatives, including support for the Soweto Catholic Church Choir, the Parish Missionary Council, and a building project for the residence of the parish priest.

Furthermore, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja added Ksh200,000 (roughly Sh4.1 million) to the same cause.
Despite the apparent goodwill behind the donations, the archbishop’s statement underscored the Catholic Church’s position against the politicization of religious organizations. Archbishop Anyolo asserted that the Church is dedicated to preserving its independence and integrity, emphasizing that political fundraising efforts should not take place within sacred spaces.

“Politicians are urged to refrain from turning the pulpit into a stage for political rhetoric,” Archbishop Anyolo remarked. “Such actions undermine the sanctity of worship places.”
In addition to rejecting the donation, the Archbishop called on political leaders to prioritize pressing issues raised by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), notably corruption, human rights abuses, political disputes, and the need for freedom of expression. He emphasized that the Church must stand as a neutral entity, free from political influence, to fulfill its role as a facilitator of spiritual and communal guidance.

As the Church continues to navigate its relationship with political leaders, it aims to ensure that its mission remains untainted by external influences.
