Kugbo Bus Terminal Roof Ripped Apart by Windstorm Hours Before Planned Commissioning – N51bn Project Hit by Fresh Setback

In a dramatic turn of events, the ultra-modern Kugbo Bus Terminal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), part of a N51 billion project championed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, suffered significant damage when a powerful windstorm tore through its roof and structures just before a scheduled commissioning ceremony today.

Eyewitnesses and viral videos circulating on social media captured the moment strong winds lifted and scattered roofing materials at the facility, leaving parts of the terminal exposed and damaged.

The incident occurred as preparations were reportedly underway for the event, raising fresh questions about the project’s durability and overall quality.

The Kugbo Bus Terminal, alongside similar facilities at Mabushi and the Central Business District, was inaugurated in June 2025 by President Bola Tinubu as part of efforts to ease transportation challenges, reduce traffic congestion, and curb the menace of “one-chance” robberies in Abuja.

Designed to handle thousands of passengers daily with modern amenities, the terminals were touted as world-class infrastructure.

However, despite the fanfare surrounding their completion and inauguration, the facilities—including Kugbo—have largely remained idle for over nine months.

FCT Minister Wike had explained that operations require Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval for a public-private partnership (PPP) model, and residents have repeatedly called for the terminals to become functional.

Recent visits by journalists had already highlighted issues at the Kugbo site, including peeling roofs, loose ceiling materials, visible cracks, and signs of substandard workmanship.

Some air conditioning units were reportedly stolen due to inadequate security, further underscoring maintenance concerns even before today’s storm.

The N51 billion allocation covered the construction of three major bus terminals in the FCT. While critics and fact-checkers have questioned the per-terminal cost breakdown, the project was positioned as a key deliverable under Wike’s administration to modernize Abuja’s transport system.

As of press time, there has been no official statement from the FCT Administration or Minister Wike regarding the extent of damage caused by the windstorm or whether the commissioning will be rescheduled. Officials are expected to assess the structural integrity of the facility and determine the cost and timeline for repairs.

This latest incident adds to the growing scrutiny over the quality and timely utilization of high-profile infrastructure projects in the FCT. Residents have expressed frustration, with many questioning how a newly completed “ultra-modern” terminal could be so vulnerable to weather elements.
