The Nigeria Labour Union (NLU) has expressed outrage over the recent increase in fuel pump price, demanding an immediate reversal of the hike. NLU President, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, stated that the union accepted the N70,000 national minimum wage based on the understanding that the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) would not be increased.

Ugboaja accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of betrayal, saying, “One of the reasons we accepted N70,000 as the national minimum wage was the understanding that the pump price of PMS would not be increased, even though we knew that N70,000 was not sufficient. However, the recent hike in fuel price has reneged on that agreement, and we see this as a betrayal of trust.”

He urged the government to take immediate action to reverse the hike and find alternative solutions to address the country’s economic challenges

The NLU president emphasized that the fuel price increase would further exacerbate the suffering of Nigerian workers, who are already struggling to cope with the high cost of living. He urged the government to take immediate action to reverse the hike and find alternative solutions to address the country’s economic challenges.

Ugboaja warned that if the government fails to address the union’s demands, they would be forced to embark on industrial action, which would cripple the economy. He stressed that the NLU would not stand idly by while workers suffer due to the government’s policies.

The NLU’s demands come on the heels of widespread criticism of the fuel price hike, which has sparked outrage among Nigerians. The government has been accused of insensitivity and lack of empathy for the plight of ordinary citizens.
