Lagos Govt Arrests People Selling Styrofoam from July 1 as Deadline Elapsed

The Lagos State Government has commenced enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics, warning that any shop, market, or outlet found storing, selling, or distributing Styrofoam packs, plastic straws, lightweight nylon bags, or disposable cutlery will be sealed.

This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to reduce waste generation and ease the burden on landfill sites.

Banned Items: Styrofoam packs: Non-biodegradable and contributes to environmental pollution.

Plastic straws: Targets plastic materials below 40 microns, posing serious environmental threats.

Lightweight nylon bags: Contributes to drainage blockages and urban pollution

Disposable cups and cutlery: Non-biodegradable and harms the environment

According to Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the ban targets plastic materials below 40 microns, which pose serious environmental threats, especially by clogging drainage channels and polluting Lagos’ fragile coastal ecosystem.

“We gave a six-month grace period, which expired on June 30. Many believe we would succumb to pressure and delay enforcement. It will not happen,” Wahab emphasized.

The government has developed covert enforcement strategies to ensure compliance, and offenders will face punishment according to environmental laws.

Lagos joins over 70 countries and major cities that have adopted bans or restrictions on single-use plastics since Bangladesh first implemented such a measure in 2002. The government’s decision aims to protect the safety and well-being of Lagos residents and maintain environmental responsibility.
