Following the outbreak of an index case of a Lassa Fever in Adamawa, the state health commissioner, Chief Felix Tangwami has expressed government commitment at eradicating the disease soon.
He gave the indication Monday in a Press Briefing held at the conference hall of the health ministry, state secretariat Yola.
The commissioner recalled that the ministry announced outbreak of the index case following a positive confirmation of an investigation of a sample result by National Reference Laboratory, NRL, Abuja taken from an NYSC member posted to Adamawa state for national assignment.
According to him, Lassa Fever is an Acute Viral Hemorrhagic Illness caused by Lassa Virus.
He added that it is mainly transmitted to or infects human through exposure to food or household items contaminated with faeces of infected rodents.
Chief Tangwami maintained that the fever is characterized by general weakness and malaise, headache, sore throat, Muscle Pain, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea and cough among others.
The commissioner of health who recalled record of the index case on the twenty second of February, twenty twenty four commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for personally responding by putting a call to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Socal Welfare to assist the state where possible.
This prompt reaction by the Governor according to the commissioner points to the sterling leadership style of the Governor directed at ensuring the good of his people.
Tangwami pointed out that as ministry, they made a request to the Director General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC to permit them henceforth to take their sample to Bauchi Molecular Laboratory being closet to Adamawa state.
He said further noted that the ministry has a committed united Health Team that is ready always to deliver on any given health challenge.
Felix Tangwami who noted that the state is envisaged to be gripped by meningitis, urged the public to steer clear of congested area in this hot season and always exposed themselves to healthy ventilation.
The Health Commissioner urged the public to be calm and obey instructions and advice by health workers for improved health and prevention of other epidemics.
He appreciated among others the Development Partners, for their critical role in the are of technical advice, participation and capacity building at any given time.
The commissioner promised to continue to keep the public abreast of unfolding issues relating to public health.
