The Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN), Yola Diocese, hosted its Grand Traditional Dance and Cultural Festival at St. Monica LCCN Cathedral in Nasarawa Mission Quarters, Jimeta, Yola.
The event not only celebrated Adamawa’s rich heritage but also spotlighted Dr. Salihu Bakari Girei, widely regarded as the frontrunner for the 2027 governorship election as a unifying figure whose vision transcends religious and ethnic divides.
Dr. Girei, the Director of Research, Development, and Centres of Excellence at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), served as Chairman of the occasion.
Addressing a diverse gathering of academics, government officials, traditional rulers, church members, and community leaders from across Adamawa State, he delivered a compelling message on the pivotal role of culture in nation-building.
“Culture is not merely a reflection of the past,” Dr. Girei declared, “but a powerful tool for fostering social cohesion, protecting human dignity, and driving sustainable development.”
He stressed that societies preserving their cultural heritage are better equipped to build national unity rooted in shared identity and values. Dr. Girei’s presence carried added significance amid growing momentum for his governorship bid under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Known affectionately as “Wakilin Makaranta Adamawa” (the Advocate of Education in Adamawa), his track record in education and community service has positioned him as a standout candidate.
Supporters highlight his quiet yet impactful legacy: a PhD holder whose work at TETFund has advanced research and excellence in tertiary institutions nationwide, while his earlier roles—including contributions to Adamawa’s education sector—have earned him widespread acclaim.
Despite being Muslim, Dr. Girei emphasized his deep, longstanding ties with the LCCN community, describing its members as “his own people.”
He underscored the necessity of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect across religious lines in a diverse state like Adamawa.
To illustrate this commitment, he recounted his instrumental role in establishing a high-standard primary school in a local community, ensuring children access quality education comparable to urban facilities. “Education is a unifying force,” he said, noting his deliberate focus on excellence to build strong foundations for future generations.
In a generous gesture underscoring his dedication to heritage and development, Dr. Girei made a substantial financial donation—running into millions of naira to the LCCN Yola Diocese Cultural Committee.
The funds will support cultural preservation efforts and bolster the church’s community outreach and development programs.
A poignant highlight was Dr. Girei’s heartfelt tribute to his former primary school teacher, Mrs. Pharmata Ishaya. He credited her mentorship as a cornerstone of his success, describing education and guidance as essential pillars for personal achievement and societal advancement.
Mrs. Ishaya, visibly moved, likened the reunion to “celebrating a birthday,” expressing profound joy at witnessing her former pupil’s accomplishments. Dr. Girei embraced the moment as a reminder of the enduring impact of early community support.
This event aligns with Dr. Girei’s broader “Adamawa Transformation Mission,” as outlined on his official platform and echoed by grassroots movements. Over 1,000 coordinators have mobilized in his support, strategizing across the state.
