Barely 24 hours to the scheduled Taraba State Local government election slated for tomorrow June 30, gunmen suspected to be Jukun militia attacked Afogba village in Donga local government area of the State.
Local residents said one person was feared killed and three others sustained various degrees of injuries in the attack which occurred in the early hours of Monday 29th June, 2020.
Livinus Akaa told our correspondent through a phone that the gunmen in their numbers invaded the community at dawn and opened fire.
“They came from Tunari axis and invaded our community. Fortunately, we got wind of their coming and many people fled.
“The person killed ran into them because it was still dark and he was slaughtered. Three others sustained injuries and were evacuated to the hospital,” Akaa said.
When contacted through an SMS, Police Public Relations officer, Taraba State Command, DSP David Misal said they are aware of the attack.
“We are aware” Misal replied.
The Jukun and Tiv ethnic groups in Taraba have been embroiled in a bloody clash in southern part of the State since April 1, 2019, with the crisis now escalating to Bali and Gassol local government areas in the central zone.
Meanwhile, Governor Darius Ishaku has approved Monday 29th, Tuesday 30th June and Wednesday 1st July, 2020 as public holidays.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hassan Mijinyawa and made available to our correspondent in Jalingo, Ishaku said the public holiday was to enable civil servants in the state to travel to their respective wards and vote in the local government election.
The statement also quoted the Governor as urging the people of the state to be orderly, law abiding and conduct themselves peacefully while discharging their civic rights.
