MAU, Cury Seal Group, IIT Madras Sign MoU for Research, Innovation

In a significant development for higher education and technological advancement in Nigeria, Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, has officially entered into a strategic partnership with the Cury Seal Group and the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, India.

This collaboration was sealed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on Research, Development, and Innovation.

The formal signing ceremony took place at the Vice-Chancellor’s Council Chamber of Modibbo Adama University in Yola, underscoring a pivotal moment in fostering stronger ties between Nigerian academia and both local and international industry partners.

During the event, Engineer Diaulhaq Abubakar, the Chief Executive Officer of Cury Seal Group and President of Blue Community Africa, addressed attendees and explained that this partnership is the result of months of dedicated engagements, including trust-building exercises, technical planning sessions, and strategic alignment efforts among all involved parties.

Engineer Abubakar emphasized that the role of Cury Seal Group and Blue Community Africa extends far beyond mere facilitation. He stated that these organizations are deeply committed to acting as a crucial bridge connecting academic institutions with industry players, ensuring that research outcomes are effectively translated into practical, real-world applications.

He provided specific details on the focus areas for Adamawa State, noting that the newly established Research, Development, and Innovation Centre will prioritize the scientific validation of medicinal herbs that are deeply rooted in indigenous knowledge systems.

Additionally, it will concentrate on value addition to palm trees and palm-derived products, encompassing a wide range of applications such as food processing, cosmetics production, development of biomaterials, and creation of industrial inputs.

According to Engineer Abubakar, this initiative will play a vital role in advancing Nigeria’s technological sovereignty by significantly reducing the country’s dependence on imports and actively promoting the export of solutions that are developed locally.

He further elaborated on the ambitious long-term vision, which includes positioning Modibbo Adama University as a recognized centre of excellence in innovation, transforming Adamawa State into a thriving technology hub, and establishing Nigeria as a leading producer and exporter of innovative ideas and solutions on the global stage.

In his own remarks, Professor Ibrahim Umar, the Vice-Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University, expressed profound commendation for Engineer Abubakar’s leadership in driving this initiative forward.

He described the MoU as a robust and practical framework designed specifically to bridge the longstanding gap between academia and industry through targeted efforts in research, innovation, and skills development.

Professor Umar detailed how the collaboration will result in the creation and delivery of high-quality professional courses and comprehensive research programmes.

These will be facilitated by a diverse pool of experts, including Nigerian professionals, Indian specialists from IIT Madras, and other international contributors.

He provided assurances that research outputs generated at the university will no longer be left unused on shelves, as has sometimes been the case in the past.

Instead, they will be systematically commercialized to benefit all stakeholders involved, with a transparent and clearly defined sharing formula agreed upon among the partners.

Representatives from IIT Madras shared insights into the partnership, revealing that it will encompass systematic and structured research across multiple disciplines, including science, technology, and the social sciences.

The primary aims are to expand the frontiers of knowledge and to translate research findings into practical, scalable solutions that deliver measurable economic and societal impact.

Speaking on behalf of the Indian delegation, Abdulkhter Haoris elaborated that the partnership is poised to support innovation on multiple fronts, enhance economic growth through effective commercialization of research, build and strengthen research capacity among students and professionals, and directly address pressing societal challenges in key areas such as health, agriculture, energy, and digital transformation.

The MAU/Blue Community Research, Development, and Innovation Centre, located in Yola, is anticipated to serve as a multifaceted hub.

Its core functions will include supporting cutting-edge scientific research, driving technological advancements, promoting vibrant innovation ecosystems, incubating promising start-ups, facilitating collaborative partnerships among academia, government bodies, and the private sector, and widely disseminating research findings through academic publications and international conferences.

Overall, this initiative is expected to fulfill a critical role in converting academic research into tangible products, services, and policies that have the potential to substantially improve lives, stimulate economic growth, and tackle the most urgent development challenges facing Nigeria and the region.
