Military Considers Engaging Locally Fabricated Arms Manufacturers, says CDS

In a significant development, the Nigerian military has expressed its intention to explore ways to harness the skills of law-abiding citizens engaged in the local production of firearms and military-grade equipment.

This move is part of the military’s commitment to putting an end to the production and circulation of illegal arms in the country. Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, made this announcement during an operational visit to the frontline troops under Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State, where he reviewed a cache of locally made arms and ammunition seized within the areas of operation.

General Musa’s visit was part of his operational tour of defence headquarters, which included a stop at the headquarters of 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, where he was received by the General Officer Commanding. He also inspected the quarter guard and proceeded to Sector 8 of Operation Safe Haven in Mangu for an inspection of military hardware and operational equipment in the forward operation base. The Chief of Defence Staff reiterated that additional resources, including advanced weaponry, vehicles, and welfare improvements, were on the way to further enhance the operational capabilities of the troops.

In his address, General Musa charged the troops to take the fight to criminal hideouts and flush them out completely, marking a renewed and greater vigor in the fight against insurgency in 2025. He also emphasized the importance of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights in the conduct of military operations, acknowledging the efforts of the troops in maintaining peace and security in the areas of operation despite numerous challenges. The military’s consideration of engaging locally fabricated arms manufacturers is a significant step towards addressing the issue of illegal arms proliferation in the country.
