Military-Media Synergy Crucial for National Security – CDS Musa

The Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has said the need for synergy between the military and the media has never been more pressing than in this era of asymmetric warfare, insurgency, and evolving security threats.

He asserted this at a maiden symposium with the theme: “The Future of Journalism Practice in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospect” organized by the Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in collaboration with Chediya Media Limited held in Kaduna on Thursday.

The CDS who was ably represented by the Garrison Commander, 1 Div Kaduna, Brig General Mohammed Kana, said the theme of the gathering was timely and relevant, given the evolving landscape of journalism in Nigeria and the growing complexity of our security challenges.

The Future of Journalism Practice in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospect

According to him, it is noteworthy that journalism in Nigeria depends largely on its adaptability to modern challenges and its ability to collaborate with key national institutions, including the military.

He said as security challenges continue to evolve, so must our approach to media-military relations, urging journalists and security operatives to work together in the spirit of patriotism, professionalism and national interest.

He said: “In today’s rapidly changing security environment, the media plays an indispensable role in shaping public perception, disseminating vital information, and fostering national unity.

“The relationship between the military and the media, therefore, cannot be overstated, as both institutions serve critical functions in national development and stability.”

Gen Musa who was the keynote speaker at the event, noted that while the military is tasked with protecting Nigeria’s national sovereignty and maintaining law and order, the media serves as the watchdog of society, ensuring accountability and transparency.

He however, said, the interface between these 2 institutions has often been fraught with challenges, stemming from issues of misinformation, sensationalism and a lack of trust.

He added: “It is therefore imperative that we foster a more dynamic and collaborative relationship that ensures responsible reporting while safeguarding national security interests.

“To achieve this synergy, there is a need for continuous engagement, capacity-building, and mutual respect between the military and the media.

“The media must be empowered with accurate and timely information to counter false narratives that may undermine national security.

“Likewise, the military must appreciate the crucial role of the media in nation-building and adopt a more open and transparent communication approach.

A well-informed public, guided by accurate and responsible journalism, will ultimately contribute to a more secure and prosperous Nigeria

“Establishing structured communication channels, conducting regular workshops, and enhancing media literacy within the security sector will go a long way in bridging the gap and fostering trust between these 2 entities.
