The initiative, revealed by Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa during a courtesy visit to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri at the Government House in Yola on Friday, aims to bolster security and curb the activities of non-state actors in the region. General Musa, accompanied by a delegation of senior military officers from Defence Headquarters, outlined the strategic importance of the new sector command.

He highlighted the growing threat posed by insurgents, particularly through the Hong Local Government Area, which has become a hotspot for infiltrations by non-state actors. To address this, the military plans to rehabilitate and upgrade the existing barracks in Mubi to serve as the operational hub for the new command.

“We will operationalize and strengthen the command, especially as non-state actors are increasingly infiltrating through Hong, causing havoc,” General Musa stated.

“Our goal is to decisively deal with these insurgents and restore the peace Nigeria once enjoyed.” The Chief of Defence Staff emphasized that the Nigerian Air Force would be reinforced to provide rapid response capabilities, ensuring that insurgents are denied operational space.

He also commended Adamawa’s relative stability, despite its shared border with Cameroon, attributing this to the state government’s proactive security measures and Governor Fintiri’s leadership. Governor Fintiri welcomed the announcement, describing the establishment of the sector command as a timely intervention that would strengthen Adamawa’s security architecture.

“When you succeed in the field, my people sleep peacefully,” he said. “I’m pleased with your reforms in the security sector. Establishing a sector command in Mubi will greatly help in curbing insecurity in the state.” The governor referenced recent attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Madagali and Hong, underscoring the urgency of enhanced military presence.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the military, including through infrastructure development and empowering local hunters to complement security efforts. Fintiri also proposed rotating military officers across different locations in the state to enhance operational effectiveness.

In addition, the governor appealed for increased troop deployment to address threats along the Hong axis, where insurgent activities have been particularly pronounced.

He praised the Armed Forces for their sacrifices and unwavering dedication to protecting lives and property in Adamawa and across Nigeria. The establishment of the Mubi sector command marks a significant milestone in the military’s ongoing efforts to combat insurgency and restore stability in Adamawa State.

As preparations for the new command move forward, residents of Adamawa are hopeful that this strategic intervention will pave the way for lasting peace and security in the state.
