In a groundbreaking announcement at the Fombina International Conference on Peace, Security, and Development in the Lake Chad Region, Dr. Ahmad Sajoh, representing the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Muktar Maiha, unveiled plans for a modern abattoir capable of processing up to 1,000 cows daily.
The state-of-the-art facility is set to transform Nigeria’s livestock sector by generating biogas to power entire communities, creating jobs, and fostering economic prosperity.
Speaking at Modibbo Adama University in Yola, Dr. Sajoh emphasized the transformative potential of the livestock sector under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is committed to turning the livestock sector into a thriving, commercialized industry,” he stated, highlighting the ministry’s role in coordinating reforms and stimulating investments to drive economic growth and eradicate poverty.
The proposed abattoir is more than a meat-processing hub. It will incorporate innovative technologies to produce biogas from animal waste, providing a sustainable energy source for surrounding communities.

Additionally, the facility will support value-added services such as feed production, tannery, and cold chain logistics, creating a ripple effect of economic opportunities.
“This is a multi-million Naira investment opportunity,” Dr. Sajoh noted, urging entrepreneurs, women, and youths to tap into the potential of livestock fattening, leather processing, and dairy marketing.
The initiative aligns with the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, recently endorsed by the National Economic Council, which aims to grow the livestock economy from $32 billion to $74 billion by 2030.

The conference, themed around the historical Fombina Empire’s legacy of peace and governance, provided a platform for scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore sustainable development pathways.
Dr. Sajoh commended the resilience of the Lake Chad Basin’s communities, whose farming, fishing, and livestock activities form the backbone of the region’s economy despite challenges like insurgency and climate change.
