The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), has issued a stern warning to drug barons and traffickers, declaring that his newly confirmed second five-year term will intensify the agency’s crackdown on illicit drug networks across Nigeria.
Speaking to jubilant staff at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja following his reappointment by President Bola Tinubu, Marwa vowed zero tolerance for drug-related crimes.
“This second tenure is going to be hell and bleak for them,” he said. “Drugs shall not pass — in or out or within Nigeria.”
Marwa urged individuals involved in trafficking and illegal cultivation to immediately abandon the trade.
“This is the right time for them to drop that criminal business and face something legitimate,” he stated. “If you refuse, you will be arrested, the drugs will be seized, and your assets will be confiscated. You will come out of jail to find nothing left.”
The retired general expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, NDLEA personnel, and local and international partners for their support, describing the renewed mandate as a call for greater dedication.
“We thank the President for recognising our collective efforts and giving us the opportunity to continue this war against drug abuse and trafficking,” Marwa said.
On the agency’s rehabilitation initiatives, he announced plans to expand facilities nationwide, with seven new centres slated for construction in 2025 to ensure every state has at least one.
“We are rededicating our efforts to prevention, counseling, treatment, and rehabilitation,” he added.
Marwa also highlighted a recent approval for mandatory drug testing for students entering tertiary institutions, emphasising its role in early intervention.
“It will help catch them young before addiction sets in,” he noted.
The NDLEA’s renewed vigour under Marwa’s leadership signals an escalation in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against drug abuse and trafficking.
