The proposed budget allocation is part of the government’s efforts to prioritize education and research in the agricultural sector. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has designated N180 billion for Federal Universities of Agriculture and research institutes. This allocation will benefit several institutions, including the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State; Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State; and over 40 research institutes, such as the Agricultural Research and Management Institute, Ilorin, and the National Cereals Research Institute, Badeggi.
Dr. Moses Ogah, a lecturer at the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University in Makurdi, described the proposed allocation as a “constructive advancement” but emphasized the need for strategic implementation. He noted that the primary goal of establishing universities of agriculture is to engage in food production and provide subsidized food to the populace, a mission that has not been fully achieved.
