NAGGW Launches Bold Campaign to Combat Desertification in 11 Northern States

The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) has launched a high-level advocacy campaign in Jigawa State, marking the first phase of its intensified efforts to combat desertification across 11 frontline states in Northern Nigeria. The initiative aims to restore degraded lands, enhance climate resilience, and promote sustainable land management in the region.

Led by Director-General Alhaji Saleh Abubakar, the NAGGW delegation paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Nura Kazaure, Jigawa State’s Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, at the State Secretariat. Abubakar highlighted the visit’s purpose: to strengthen collaboration, evaluate ongoing interventions, and explore new opportunities for land restoration under the Great Green Wall initiative.

He praised Jigawa’s longstanding partnership, noting the state’s provision of land for planting and regeneration projects. “Our presence here is to thank the Jigawa State Government for their unwavering support and to deepen our partnership,” Abubakar said.

Dr. Kazaure welcomed the delegation, expressing pride in Jigawa being the first stop in NAGGW’s advocacy tour. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting NAGGW’s mandate, which aligns with Governor Umar Namadi’s 12-point agenda for sustainable development. Kazaure urged the agency to enhance community engagement to curb vandalism of projects and foster greater collaboration with the state government.
