NANS Leadership Crisis Deepens Over CNG Bus Distribution

A major controversy is brewing within the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) over the allocation of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to higher institutions across the country.

A faction of the student body has accused NANS President Lucky Emonefe and Senate President Babatunde Akinteye Afeez of favoritism in the distribution process, sparking a heated debate over transparency and equity. The group has passed a vote of no confidence on the two leaders, claiming that the allocation process lacks fairness and accountability.

The faction has taken their grievances to the highest authorities, submitting a petition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other key stakeholders, urging them to intervene urgently to prevent unrest. They are calling for a thorough investigation into the distribution process and demanding the immediate redistribution of the buses to ensure fairness and accountability. The petition highlights the economic impact of unequal distribution, noting that many students rely on affordable transportation to navigate campus life.

It’s worth noting that the Federal Government had recently launched an initiative to distribute 500 CNG buses and 100 electric vehicles as part of a robust public transport system. The programme aims to provide cleaner energy and a more environmentally friendly transport system, with the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, announcing that the fuel cost for CNG-powered vehicles is about one-third of the fuel for petrol-powered vehicles.

The NANS leadership crisis has significant implications for the credibility of the organization and the political integrity of the current administration.
