The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone E (North East) has reiterated its commitment to tackling the pressing issue of small arms and light weapons proliferation in the North East region of Nigeria. Following a recent lecture by the North East Zonal Coordinator of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, NANS Zone E is urging security agencies to collaborate with them in launching initiatives to educate students about the risks associated with these weapons and promote a culture of peace and conflict resolution.

The lecture, which took place during the inauguration of the new NANS Zone E executive in Jalingo, Taraba State, on January 24, 2025, highlighted the devastating effects of small arms proliferation on communities, particularly among youths and students.

NANS Zone E believes that a concerted effort involving advocacy programs, workshops, and community outreach will empower students to become advocates for peace and responsible citizenship.

The newly elected NANS Zone E executives, led by Comrade Umar Afkawa, have pledged to support the fight against illicit arms in their institutions and society, and have emphasized the need for continued collaboration with the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons. Afkawa’s vision is to improve the welfare services of students in the zone and to take a strong stance against illicit arms among students.

By working together, NANS Zone E and security agencies can create a unified front against the menace of arm proliferation, fostering an environment that champions safety and long-lasting peace in the North East region. This collaboration is crucial not only for the wellbeing of immediate communities but also for the future of the entire region, which has suffered significantly from violence and insecurity.
