Nigeria faced yet another setback on Thursday as the national grid suffered a collapse, exacerbating the country’s ongoing electricity woes.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident, informing customers via social media platforms.
In a statement, AEDC stated: “Dear valued customers, please be informed that the current power outage is due to a system failure from the national grid. The system collapsed at about 16:28 hours today 28 March 2024, causing the outage currently being experienced across our franchise area.”
Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company issued a notice, saying: “Dear valued customer, kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 16:28hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid.”
This incident follows a similar grid collapse on February 4, adding to the challenges faced by Nigerians in accessing reliable electricity.
Notably, Nigeria has grappled with recurring grid failures, as highlighted by a report from the International Energy Agency, which noted 46 collapses between 2017 and 2023.
The severity of these incidents was underscored by a previous collapse on December 12, 2023, which saw a drastic drop in power generation from 4,032.8MW to a mere 43.5MW.
The impact on citizens’ lives and economic activities has been significant, prompting calls for urgent measures to address the underlying issues plaguing the nation’s power infrastructure.
As Nigerians endure yet another blackout, stakeholders are urged to redouble efforts in restoring normalcy to the grid and implementing sustainable solutions to prevent future occurrences.
