The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced the relocation of its 2025 Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt to Enugu, following President Bola Tinubu’s controversial declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State.

The decision underscores growing concerns over the state’s political climate and perceived violations of constitutional governance.

In a joint statement released late Thursday, NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN), General Secretary Mobolaji Ojibara, and AGCPC Chairman Emeka Obegolu (SAN) outlined the association’s rationale behind the move. Initially, the selection of Port Harcourt as the host city had generated considerable enthusiasm among members, with registration numbers reflecting a strong eagerness to participate.

The appointment of a Sole Administrator in Rivers State is unconstitutional

However, the situation drastically changed after the imposition of emergency rule and the controversial appointment of a sole administrator, a retired military officer, who has adopted a command-style governing approach.

“The appointment of a Sole Administrator in Rivers State is unconstitutional,” the NBA declared, emphasizing that such governance undermines democratic principles and violates Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution. The association expressed concern that the administrator’s military-style leadership poses a direct threat to the rule of law, disregarding constitutional provisions and pending litigation.

The NBA’s National Executive Council (NEC) convened an emergency session to discuss the implications of the current political climate, eventually reaching a consensus that proceeding with the conference in Rivers State would be tantamount to endorsing constitutional violations. The decision to relocate reflects a commitment to uphold the rule of law and democratic integrity.

We are pleased to announce that the 2025 Annual General Conference will now be held in Enugu

Announcing the new venue, the NBA expressed confidence in Enugu, the historic Coal City, which possesses the necessary infrastructure to host an event of such magnitude. “We are pleased to announce that the 2025 Annual General Conference will now be held in Enugu,” the statement read. The association is appealing to its members and stakeholders for support in ensuring the success of the conference amidst this transition.

With this bold move, the NBA aims to reaffirm its dedication to constitutional democracy while addressing the pressing concerns of its membership regarding governance and the rule of law in Nigeria.

As the political landscape evolves, the association’s decision to relocate serves as a significant statement against unconstitutional practices and a commitment to upholding democratic values.
