The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern reminder to domestic airlines to adhere to the mandatory 14-day timeframe for processing passenger ticket refunds, as stipulated in Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023.

The directive comes amid growing complaints from travelers, like Amina Bello, a schoolteacher who waited six weeks for a refund after a canceled flight. “It felt like my money was held hostage,” she shared, echoing the frustration of many.

The NCAA has called out airlines for misleading passengers with claims that refunds take four weeks, asserting that such practices undermine regulatory authority and erode public trust. “There can’t be two captains on this aircraft,” said NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu, emphasizing the clarity of the 14-day rule. “Operators cannot create their own timelines.”

Passengers facing delays are urged to report non-compliant airlines by forwarding communications to michael.achimugu@ncaa.gov.ng, ifueko.abdulmalik@ncaa.gov.ng, or cpd@ncaa.gov.ng. “We’re committed to protecting travelers,” said Ifueko Abdulmalik, NCAA’s consumer protection head. “No one should endure unfair delays.”

The authority’s firm stance aims to restore confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector, ensuring airlines prioritize passenger rights.

The NCAA vows to enforce compliance, promising sanctions for violators to safeguard a smoother travel experience.
