NDC Zones Presidential Ticket to South, Clears Path for Peter Obi’s One-Term Bid

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally zoned its presidential ticket to the Southern part of the country for a single four-year term, a decision widely seen as paving the way for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

The resolution was unanimously adopted at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Saturday, May 9, 2026. A motion for the zoning was moved by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, and seconded by Seyi Sowunmi.

According to the zoning formula, after the single four-year term by a Southern candidate, the presidential ticket will automatically return to the North.

The decision has intensified speculation that Peter Obi, who has repeatedly stated he would serve only one term if elected president, is now the clear frontrunner for the NDC ticket.

Speaking at the convention, NDC National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democracy, constitutional governance, justice, and national development.

“The NDC remains committed to justice, freedom, and service to the people,” Senator Zuwoghe said, describing the convention as a crucial platform for strengthening democratic values and promoting equal opportunity across Nigeria.

The convention, however, witnessed a brief chaotic scene as a large crowd struggled to gain entrance into the venue, which many described as inadequate for the number of delegates and supporters. Security operatives had to intervene to restore order before proceedings continued.

The zoning arrangement is expected to shape the evolving political landscape as Nigeria prepares for the 2031 general elections, with the NDC positioning itself as a formidable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Political observers believe the move could attract significant support from the South, particularly the South-East, while reassuring Northern stakeholders with the built-in succession clause.
