In a significant step toward enhancing psychosocial support and community resilience in Adamawa State, the Counseling Association of Nigeria (CASSON) Adamawa State Chapter and the Star Ladies Widows Foundation have paid separate familiarization visits to Barr. Khalifa M. Lawan, the State Coordinator of the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
The visits, aimed at exploring collaborative opportunities, focused on forging strategic partnerships to strengthen mental health support, psychosocial services, and empowerment programmes specifically targeted at widows in the state.
Both organizations highlighted the pressing needs in post-conflict recovery, where trauma, loss, and economic vulnerability continue to affect many residents, particularly women who have lost spouses due to insurgency and other challenges in the North East region.
CASSON, the national professional body of trained, registered, and licensed counsellors dedicated to advancing guidance, counseling, and psychosocial well-being, emphasized its expertise in providing professional mental health interventions.
The Adamawa Chapter seeks to collaborate with NEDC to expand access to counseling services, trauma-informed care, and community-based psychosocial programs that address the lingering effects of conflict and displacement.
Similarly, the Star Ladies Widows Foundation, focused on supporting widows through empowerment, skills acquisition, and welfare initiatives, proposed joint efforts to deliver sustainable livelihood programs, economic empowerment, and holistic support for vulnerable widows and their families.
Responding warmly to the delegations, Barr. Khalifa M. Lawan reaffirmed the NEDC’s unwavering commitment to holistic development, social inclusion, and the psychosocial well-being of citizens in the North East.
He noted that the Commission’s mandate extends beyond physical reconstruction to include human capital development, vulnerability reduction, and inclusive interventions that prioritize mental health, gender equity, and community healing.
Barr. Lawan expressed enthusiasm about potential partnerships, stating that such collaborations align perfectly with NEDC’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable groups through relief, skills training, health schemes, and empowerment initiatives.
He assured the organizations of the Commission’s readiness to explore concrete areas of cooperation, including integrated psychosocial support within broader recovery programs and targeted empowerment for widows to foster self-reliance and resilience.
The meetings underscore growing recognition of the interconnectedness between mental health, economic empowerment, and sustainable development in Adamawa State.
Stakeholders anticipate that these engagements will pave the way for impactful joint projects that benefit widows, conflict-affected individuals, and the wider community.
As the NEDC continues to drive people-centered interventions across the region, these partnerships signal a promising collaborative approach to addressing both immediate psychosocial needs and long-term empowerment goals in Adamawa State.
