Nenadi Usman gives condition for Abure, others to regain LP leadership

National Chairman of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, has called on Julius Abure and his camp to find their way back to the party’s leadership positions through election.

The LP National Chairman said that Abure and others have the opportunity to contest for the party’s Chairmanship and other positions in the upcoming national congress.

She called on the aggrieved members to put selfish interest aside and seek peace and betterment of the political parties.

In January, the Federal High Court in Abuja sacked Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.

The judge, Peter Lifu, in his ruling cited the Supreme Court verdict of 4 April 2025 to declare former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as the valid leader of the party.

The court said that INEC must recognise the Usman-led caretaker committee as “the only valid authority to represent the Labour Party,” pending the party’s national convention.

But since the ruling Abure and his caretaker committee has refused to bow out. In a statement on Tuesday, they maintained that they are still in charge of the party.

“I call on everyone to please put selfish interest aside, and put the interest of the party in front. Come and let’s work together,” Usman said in Abuja on Wednesday, during a one-day high-level strategic multi-level stakeholders summit theme Reuniting the Labour Party Family: consolidating strength for sustainable political impact held at the party’s national Secretariat.

“And if anybody feels strongly that he must occupy any position in the party congresses, go and contest election.

“If you win, you will be declared a winner, and you will come and be the leader of the party or whatever position it is that you are contesting for.”
