Nigeria Approves $500 Million Annual Fund to Drive Research, Innovation, Knowledge Economy

In a significant move to position Nigeria as a competitive player in the global knowledge economy, the Federal Government has approved the establishment of the National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF).

The fund is designed to strengthen the country’s research ecosystem, advance science and technology, and accelerate innovation-led development.

It will provide up to $500 million annually to support critical areas including research grants, innovation infrastructure, research commercialisation, and human capital development.

Announcing the approval, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a landmark investment in Nigeria’s future.

“The NRIDF represents a bold commitment by the government to harness research and innovation as key drivers of sustainable economic growth and national competitiveness,” Dr. Alausa said.

The fund will be supervised by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, with strategic oversight provided by a 17-member National Research and Innovation Development Council.

The Vice President will chair the council, underscoring the high-level priority the government has placed on the initiative.

Stakeholders in the research, academic, and private sectors have welcomed the development, viewing it as a long-awaited framework that could bridge the gap between scientific research and tangible economic outcomes.

The NRIDF is expected to fund cutting-edge projects, support innovation hubs, and facilitate the translation of research findings into commercial ventures.

This approval aligns with broader national goals of economic diversification, technological advancement, and the development of a skilled workforce capable of competing on the global stage.
