Nigeria Introduces Long-Acting Lenacapavir for HIV Prevention

Nigeria has taken a major step in its fight against HIV by receiving the first shipment of Long-Acting Injectable Lenacapavir (LEN) for use as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced the arrival of the innovative drug on Wednesday. The medication, administered as an injection twice a year, offers sustained protection against HIV for people at high risk of infection.

The National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme (NASCP), under the Ministry, described LEN PrEP as a game-changer. It improves adherence compared to daily oral pills, making prevention easier and more effective for many individuals.

Dr. Adebobola Bashorun, National Coordinator of NASCP, confirmed the consignment arrived on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The procurement was approved by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare and supported by the Global Fund.

“The introduction of Lenacapavir for PrEP marks a significant step toward broadening the range of prevention choices available to individuals at risk of HIV infection,” Bashorun stated.

“As a long-acting injectable option, LEN PrEP has the potential to improve adherence and expand access to effective HIV prevention services for populations that may face challenges with daily oral prevention options.”

Officials emphasized that the move strengthens Nigeria’s national response and brings the country closer to ending HIV as a public health threat. NASCP plans to work with partners for safe introduction, strategic rollout, and integration into existing HIV prevention programs, starting in priority states.

Lenacapavir, already approved by NAFDAC, has shown high efficacy in global trials—up to near-complete protection in some studies—thanks to its long-lasting action and better compliance.

The announcement follows earlier preparations announced in early March, with readiness assessments completed in 10 high-burden states.

This development adds to Nigeria’s expanding toolkit of HIV prevention tools, including oral PrEP, and reflects ongoing commitment to innovative, evidence-based interventions amid efforts to reduce new infections nationwide.
