In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s presence on the global judicial stage, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, has announced Dr. Taoheed Elias as the country’s candidate for the upcoming International Court of Justice (ICJ) election, scheduled for November at The Hague. The nomination underscores Nigeria’s commitment to contributing to international justice and diplomacy.
Dr. Taoheed Elias, a distinguished legal scholar and jurist, brings a wealth of experience to the candidacy. With an illustrious career spanning decades, Elias has earned international acclaim for his expertise in international law, human rights, and conflict resolution.
His extensive publications and prior roles in Nigeria’s judiciary, coupled with his contributions to global legal frameworks, position him as a formidable contender for the prestigious ICJ seat.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Amb. Tuggar emphasized the significance of Elias’s nomination. “Dr. Elias embodies the values of integrity, excellence, and dedication to justice that Nigeria stands for. The ICJ, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, plays a critical role in settling disputes between states and providing advisory opinions on international legal issues. The November election will see member states of the UN General Assembly and Security Council vote to fill five of the court’s 15 seats, with successful candidates serving a nine-year term starting in 2026.
Nigeria’s nomination of Dr. Elias signals its strategic intent to amplify Africa’s voice in global governance. If elected, Elias would join a select group of African jurists who have served on the court, further cementing Nigeria’s influence in shaping international law.
